Why Rocky Broad

The Rocky Broad River runs near Hickory Nut Gap. Hickory Creek runs the length of the gorge past Gerton and connects into the Rocky Broad River in Bat Cave, before passing Chimney Rock and flwoing into Lake Lure. In September 2024 these two water ways and it's confluence, came through the gorge and took the road, the bridges, and a good part of the town with it. Neighbors ran the rescues. That is where this publishing house was founded.

Below the lake it becomes the Broad, and the Broad runs south into the Carolina backcountry, that a British Major named Patrick Ferguson threatened in the fall of 1780. He called the men on the far side of the mountains barbarians and promised to march over the mountains and hang their leaders. The men he threatened came over the mountains without orders and without pay, crossed the Broad, and finished him at Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780. Thomas Jefferson called it the turn of the tide.

Rocky Broad Press is named for the water that runs from our front door to that battlefield. We publish books for Americans who understand that duty needs no order. The books we publush are full of history, argument, and stories about the people who built this country without asking permission.
